The Cost of Free
Nothing in life is free. That is an adage that is often overlooked today. There is always someone out there offering something for “free”. From healthcare to college, to grocery samples you can count on someone promising to give you something for FREE! It is so pervasive today that often the first question we ask is what else do we get? You’ve seen the commercials: “but that’s not all” “call now for this free bonus”. The ploy works, that is why it is used so often. What most folks don’t think about is WHY is this item without cost or even heavily discounted? If whatever they are trying to sell you is dirt cheap or free….there IS a reason. Do you let dollar signs or the lack thereof blind you?
Space For All
It seems that besides money, the one thing most of us lack is space. Space in our home to store things, space at work to organize, space on the road during rush hour. We all crave “elbow room“. Our homes, our cars, everything but our clothes seem to have shrunk over the years. So when the time comes for a celebration or training or just a simple get together the first question is usually where to gather. The second is invariably cost. Lost in the process are the issues of convenience, ambiance, and message. Your meeting or party space may be cheap or free, but what are you sacrificing to get it? This is a key question to ask when looking for space for all.
The Fine Print?
As we stated before, nothing is free. Someone invested money or worked long hours to make or develop the free service or item you are about to get. Generally, what you are getting for nothing is simply a marketing tool This is particularly true when it comes to meeting or party space. We have listed a few sources of free space and their hidden costs below:
- The “back room” at a bar or restaurant: Don’t be shocked, but they are giving you space at no charge…to sell you and your attendees’ food and drinks. See how that works? This doesn’t even touch on the loud, perhaps crowded environment you are likely to encounter. - Free hotel or conference rooms: Again, they expect you to spend money at their establishment. Whether it is selling your attendees sleeping rooms or gambling the night away at their casino, someone is paying for that space. Depending on your group, this type of environment may not fit your goals and values.
- A Community Center or Club House: Assuming you live there or pay dues, you ARE paying for that space. In general, even if you do have a connection to a venue, there is a cost to rent it.
- The Local Park: After spending on sunscreen, cooling fans and sunshades mixed with the Las Vegas temperatures, do we really even need to say more?
The Beacon Center is a neutral themed, private, well cared for venue that won’t lure you in with freebies or “special” sales.
